Osseo Senior High School celebrates boys basketball state championship teams
Osseo Senior High School (OSH) hosted a celebration at halftime of the boys basketball game against Maple Grove Senior High School on Jan. 24 honoring their 2001 and 2012 Minnesota State Championship Boys Basketball Teams. The celebration included special recognition of both teams at halftime, along with the opportunity for fans, alumni and community members to connect with players and coaches from these legendary teams at a local restaurant after the game.
Before the game, both teams and their families gathered in the cafeteria to eat dinner and socialize. During halftime, each team member and coach had their names read out and they gave a quick summary of the season. Over ten players and many coaches were present from each team. A video montage with highlight clips from their seasons was also played on the video board in the gym.
The 2001 state championship team completed a near-perfect season, finishing with an overall record of 30-1. Their only loss came against the number one nationally ranked Oak Hill Academy during the Timberwolves Shootout in December. The team went on to dominate Minnesota competition, culminating in a commanding 73-48 victory over Duluth East in the state championship game. The team’s depth, teamwork and unrelenting effort showcased why they were the best team on the court.
The 2012 state championship team etched its name into OSH history with one of the most thrilling playoff runs ever seen. Known for their incredible defense and resilience, the team’s journey included a heart-stopping triple-overtime victory in the state semifinal against three-time defending champion Hopkins High School. The game is widely regarded as one of the most remarkable overtime battles in state tournament history. The momentum carried over to the championship game, where Osseo defeated Lakeville North 48-47 on a last-second shot, securing the title in dramatic fashion.
“These teams didn’t just win titles—they created memories that define what it means to be an Osseo basketball player,” said Osseo Coach Tim Theisen, who was the head assistant coach on the 2001 team and head coach of the 2012 team. “The 2001 team’s unity and offensive dominance, combined with the 2012 team’s defensive toughness and thrilling moments, will always be a source of pride for our community.”
