Students in the Health Science Magnet program show off their skills at the school board meeting
Students in the Health Science Magnet program at Osseo Senior High School (OSH) recently showed off their emergency care skills during a demonstration at the Jan. 23 school board meeting. The students went through the steps of securing and treating three patients with different injuries.
Students in the Health Science Magnet Program get hands-on, work-ready experience in the health science and medical fields. While the program takes place at OSH, scholars from Maple Grove and Park Center Senior High Schools have the opportunity to enroll in the program as well.
At the school board meeting, instructors David Casella and Erik Bryz-Gornia joined a handful of their students to demonstrate some of the skills that they have learned, including securing a patient with a neck injury, treating a wound and applying CPR and an AED to a patient suffering from a heart attack.
“We have an EMS program that takes them from basic first aid all the way up to Emergency Medical Technician right during the high school day. It is also articulated for college credit, which is a wonderful opportunity for them. It is a great head start for any students who think they are interested in a medical career, whether they end up in the field or not. We also have a number of other courses, including nursing assistant, medical terminology, exploring medical careers and first aid and CPR,” Casella shared.
The Osseo Senior High School Health Science Magnet program was recently awarded a $223,000 grant through the Minnesota Department of Education, which will allow them to expand the program and continue preparing students interested in entering the medical field.
